Spring 2026

Jeunesse oblige! Youth obliges. But obliges us to what, exactly? Does responsibility for the future not fall equally on the “young” and the “old” alike? Whose choices shape the future if not those of all of us? What will become of art criticism in the age of generative artificial intelligence? What role does art education play in the 21st century, and how has it changed in an increasingly digital world? If cutting-edge art is an international phenomenon, why study to become an artist in Estonia when you could do so at long-established art academies abroad? How does one move forward in one’s chosen field amid the continued uncertainty of freelance artistic work? How does one travel along the boundary between light and shadow, love and decay, and in doing so release the creativity within?

In the pages of this spring issue, these questions are taken up by Oliver Laas, Erle Loonurm, Mia Maria Rohumaa, Margaret Tilk, Andreas Trossek, Vappu Thurlow, Elen Lotman, Hedi Rosma, Ann-Catherine Weise, Erkki Luuk, Kaire Nurk and Katrin Kivimaa.

The closing pages of the issue are dedicated to Heie Marie Treier, the initiator of this quarterly journal and an ever-supportive member of its editorial board, a valued colleague and a much-loved lecturer.Stay tuned!
